Native English Teachers (NETs)
Our school employs two Native English Teachers (NETs) to ensure every student has a weekly lesson with a native speaker. Working with local teachers, NETs create an authentic English learning environment and develop innovative teaching strategies. They enhance English language learning through diverse activities, promoting confidence and effective communication among students.
At Key Stage 1, our focus is on fostering effective English reading skills through a variety of engaging methods. We emphasize shared and guided reading, phonics instruction, and word recognition techniques. Our goal is to cultivate a strong foundation in literacy, enabling students to develop confidence and a love for reading.
At Key Stage 2, we enhance literacy through thematic activities based on literature. Our interactive curriculum fosters reading appreciation and proficiency while developing oral communication and writing skills. Students engage in diverse literary experiences that empower them to express themselves effectively and creatively.
Mr Houston
Hello everyone. My name is Mr Houston. This is my second year as a NET at Canossa School (Hong Kong). I’m very grateful to be a part of this excellent school and to have the opportunity to help so many wonderful students.
This year I will be teaching P1, P2, P3, P4 and P6. In the KS1 NET lessons, we will be focusing on phonics, guided reading and speaking. In the KS2 NET lessons, we will focus on shared reading, short text writing and speaking.
There are many fun and interesting extracurricular activities that the NETs are involved in, such as Hooked on Books and the School Newsletter. The extracurricular activities are a great opportunity for students to have fun, make friends, develop new skills and practise their English. I look forward to seeing you all. Let’s have a great year.
Ms Siphe
This will be my first year at Canossa and I’m looking forward to gain all the knowledge that will help with my professional growth as a teacher.
My teaching journey began in Thailand where I worked with students of all ages for 5 years and 11 months. The main focus was to enhance their speaking, reading and writing skills through interactive lessons. I’ve also worked with students who needed extra guidance with their reading skills.
In order to seek a new experience and expand my knowledge as a teacher, I moved to Hong Kong mid-2022. In the few years I’ve been in Hong Kong, I’ve taught two of the EDB curriculums, the first one being the Reading across curriculum which promoted reading and ensuring the students were able to read long and short texts and collaborating with other students. I’ve also taught the PLPR/W curriculum which focused on phonics and reading. The important part of the reading was the shared and guided reading.
In this new academic year I will be teaching P1, P2, P5 and P6. In addition, I will be part of the school’s extra-curricular activities. I look forward in guiding the students in meeting their English learning goals, reading and exploring their creative sides using the English language.
Outside of work, I enjoy reading, trying out delicious food in different parts of the city and traveling.
