School-based English Curriculum Overview

Our English language curriculum is built upon three key principles:

1.      Enhancing Language Proficiency: We focus on developing students’ language skills, ensuring they achieve a strong foundation in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

2.      Expanding Life Experiences: We strive to broaden students horizons by incorporating diverse texts and contexts, allowing them to connect their learning to the world around them.

3.      Extending Learning Capacity: We aim to cultivate students’ ability to learn independently and think critically, preparing them for future academic challenges.

An essential component of our curriculum is encouraging students to develop lifelong reading habits. We believe that fostering a love for reading enhances language proficiency and enriches students lives and learning experiences.

Our Curriculum

Guided Reading and Self-Directed Learning (SDL) Programme

Guided Reading

Guided reading is a small group session designed to support P1-2 students in developing their reading proficiency. These sessions provide targeted instruction, helping students gain independence and learn to use a variety of reading strategies.

Self-Directed Learning (SDL) Programme
The SDL program empowers students to take control of their learning. Using SDL booklets and iPads for e-learning tasks, they engage in various activities, record their reading progress, and collaborate through language-focused games that encourage communication and teamwork.

School-based literacy curriculum

Our school has developed a school-based literacy curriculum for P4-P6 to enhance students’ reading and writing skills. Each year includes modules covering diverse topics like cultural norms, tourism, and memorable experiences. Strong reading support, with readers and videos, prepares students for writing compositions. They engage in online research and brainstorming sessions, learning various text types such as articles and stories.

Literary Appreciation

P1-6 students participate in shared reading lessons with Native English Teachers (NETs), enjoying a variety of storybooks. To further foster literary appreciation, we introduce works by renowned authors such as Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton, and Jacqueline Wilson. These books are selected for their engaging language and alignment with our school’s values of education.

Reading Strategies Framework

The English Department has collaborated with the Chinese Department and the School Librarian to establish a framework of reading strategies for all six years of students. Each grade focuses on two specific strategies:

P1: Visualize, Adjust Pacing

P2: Predict, Use Context to Find Meaning

P3: Answer Questions & Look for Answers, Connect

P4: Infer, Make Notes

P5: Skim & Scan, Summarize

P6: Make Judgements, Solve Problems

E-Reading Platform – Raz-Kids

We use Raz-Kids to promote effective reading through interactive e-books, downloadable texts, and quizzes. This platform enhances vocabulary retention, boosts confidence, and improves speaking skills, making reading an enjoyable family activity.
